In the last sixteen years, Dave Mitchell has coached the Luther wrestling team to seven top-five finishes at the NCAA Championships. He has coached nine national champions, six national runners-up, and 58 All-Americans. He has also coached 52 Scholar All-Americans and three NCAA Post Graduate scholars. Dave was named the NWCA National Division III Coach of the Year in 2004, and Iowa Conference Coach of the Year in 2016, 2008, 2004, 2002, and 1999; he was nominated for Division III Rookie Coach of the Year honors in 1997 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association and USA Wrestling Magazine. Dave served a three year term as president of the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Coaches Association, and a three year term as President-Elect. In 2010, Dave was inducted into the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Before joining the Luther wrestling program Dave earned All-American wrestling honors by placing third at the NCAA Division III championships at 167 pounds. He was also a two-time NCAA Academic All-American and was selected to the GTE Academic All-America squad his senior year.
