Foster, Lomprey and Pinnow to present Luther Paideia Texts and Issues lecture Oct. 2

At a time of heightened political relevance, Carly Hayden Foster, Luther College associate professor of political science, and Luther students Madeline Lomprey and Elena Pinnow will explore multiple perspectives on immigration law in “Dreaming with Our Eyes Open: Staying Informed about DACA,” at 7 p.m., Oct. 2, in the Recital Hall of the Center for Faith and Life on the Luther campus.

The event, the first Paideia Texts and Issues lecture of the 2018-19 series “Journeys and Hospitalities,” is open to the public with no charge for admission. A reception will follow in Qualley Lounge.

In 2012, President Barack Obama issued an executive order known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals which halted the threat of deportation for children who had been brought into the United States without legal authorization, affecting 800,000 young people. It may also be argued that DACA is unconstitutional or that it rewarded those whose journeys broke federal immigration law.

The future of DACA is uncertain and given the political atmosphere of 2018, controversial issues such as DACA must be examined. Foster, Lomprey and Pinnow will lead an informational discussion revealing multiple perspectives on DACA and considering whether the United States has a responsibility to act hospitably towards unauthorized immigrants.

Foster is an associate professor of political science and the chair of the Political Science Department at Luther. She earned her doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s degrees in political science and a graduate certificate in Women’s Studies from the University of Kansas.

At Luther, Foster teaches courses on politics, policy and law in the United States. She is especially interested in the ways that race, nationality, gender and class influence the United States political system.

Lomprey, a sophomore from Waunakee, Wisconsin, is studying political science and international studies, with a focus in peace and conflict studies and French. She is involved in Cathedral Choir and this spring, she will direct the 2019 production of The Vagina Monologues on campus.

Pinnow is a sophomore from Denver, Colorado, studying political science with a focus on social policy. She works as a student ambassador in Admissions as well as a French research assistant in studying the French 2002 election.

The Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture Series, sponsored by the Paideia Endowment since 1983, encourages intellectual discussion across disciplinary lines. Each year, the Paideia Governing Board selects four to five lecture proposals on issues or texts that are central to the liberal arts.
