Carol Hester, Luther College professor of music, will perform a recital titled “The Flute and Dietrich Bonhoeffer,” inspired by the German theologian and pastor’s connections to the flute. Luther faculty members Xiao Hu, piano, Philip Borter, cello, and Igor Kalnin, violin, join Hester in the recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music on the Luther campus.

Geophysical surveying is a relatively new way to study archaeology under ground. Through her summer research project, Linh Luong, Luther College junior of La Crosse, Wisconsin, explored these prehistoric sites through geophysical surveying to provide a look into their structures without physically digging them up.

Parker’s Conjecture is the mathematical theorem that the numbers one through n (for n>24) can be arranged so that each consecutive pair sums to a perfect square. Laura Olson, Luther College junior of Webster, Minnesota, worked to prove this conjecture for her summer research project.

Hank Pellissier, founder and director of the Brighter Brains Institute in San Francisco, California, will present “Nigeria: Religion and Humanism,” 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, in Valders Hall of Science Room 262 on the Luther College campus.

Culinary archaeologist and lecturer Daniel Serra, from Malmo, Sweden, will give a presentation titled “Viking Age Food – Looking for a Lost Food Culture” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Franklin W. Olin Building, Room 102 at Luther College. Serra’s newest book “An Early Meal – a Viking Age Cookbook & Culinary Odyssey” will be available for purchase and signing at the presentation. This event will be open to the public with no charge for admission.

Local candidates running in the November election will be available to respond to questions at a local candidate forum 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, in Valders Hall of Science Room 206, on the Luther College campus.

Luther College senior Jane Clare took a look outside the “Luther Bubble” this summer in her research surrounding Buddhism in the Christian Midwest. According to Clare, it is important to be aware of and engaging in religions outside one’s own in order to navigate the world around us. “I think it is always important to look outside of our own experiences and learn about others so that we can live in and embrace a larger community,” she said.

Betel Bedada, Luther College senior, traveled to Coralville, Iowa intern for the company GEICO over the summer. This internship allowed Bedada to develop business leadership skills and gain insight about the way that GEICO runs as a company.

At a time of heightened political relevance, Carly Hayden Foster, Luther College associate professor of political science, and Luther students Madeline Lomprey and Elena Pinnow will explore multiple perspectives on immigration law in “Dreaming with Our Eyes Open: Staying Informed about DACA,” at 7 p.m., Oct. 2, in the Recital Hall of the Center for Faith and Life on the Luther campus.
