Exploring various climate-related issues through lectures, a water walk and performances, the Luther College presents Climate Justice Week April 25-May 2. The week’s events begin with a lecture presented by Jim Martin-Schramm, Luther professor religion and director of the Center for Sustainable Communities, titled “Luther’s Path to Carbon Neutrality,” at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, April 25, in Peace Dining Room.

The Dorian Choral Retreat, now in its second year, will be hosted this summer at Luther College June 28-30. This event is available to all who are interested and at least 19 years of age. The retreat is ideal for Luther alumni, music educators, church musicians, career musicians and folks who just love singing. The goal of the weekend is to be a musical retreat, a way to recharge batteries, an opportunity to take a break from everyday life and a time to explore Decorah and Luther College.

April 12, 2019

In 1988 Dr. James Hansen, then director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, testified before Congress and brought the issue of climate change to the public eye. Thirty years later, he continues to raise the public alarm about climate change. Hansen will give Luther College’s 2019 David J. Roslien Lecture on Science and Leadership at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, in Luther’s Center for Faith and Life, Main Hall.

The 2018-19 academic year has marked the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Luther College Black Student Union. To celebrate this milestone, Luther has engaged in a yearlong celebration that will culminate with a BSU Reunion Weekend, April 25-28. Through four days of public events, the reunion weekend will bring the entire campus and broader Decorah community together to honor BSU founders and celebrate 50 years of BSU presence at Luther College.

Luther College senior Katie Stuelke of Center Point, Iowa, is the 2018-2019 recipient of the Alan R. and Sally J. Brudos Family Opera Prize. As part of the award, Stuelke will perform a recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 13 in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music on the Luther campus.

Luther College junior Colin Weber of Rochester, Minnesota, has been awarded a $5,000 Rossing Physics Scholarship for the 2019-20 academic year. The Rossing scholarship is awarded annually to physics students of exceptional merit through the Thomas D. Rossing Fund for Physics Education.

The Luther College Cathedral Choir will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life on the Luther campus. This concert is the culmination of Cathedral Choir’s 2019 Wisconsin Tour.

Luther College presents a three-day Interfaith Forum, where international scholars, partitioners of interfaith collaboration and faith leaders of the Midwest gather to help engage the campus in an assembly about the challenges of interfaith existence and collaboration. This event will take place on the Luther campus from Thursday, April 4 to Saturday, April 6.

Luther College has been selected as a one of 25 participants in The Council of Independent Colleges’ second Diversity, Civility and the Liberal Arts Institute, which will be held June 2-5, 2019, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Luther College senior Joseph Keeley has been awarded a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship to study Korean for eight weeks this summer at Pusan National University, one of 10 national universities in Korea.
