Luther College presents Dorian Chamber Ensemble Intensive Recital on Feb. 10

As part of Luther College’s Dorian Orchestra Festival weekend, high school string players participating in Luther’s Dorian Chamber Ensemble Intensive will present a recital at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, in Luther’s Noble Recital Hall in Jenson-Noble Hall of Music.

The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Four chamber groups will perform in the recital, as well as students selected as soloists from their festival lessons. Soloists will be joined on the piano by Luther Professor, Nicholas Shaneyfelt. Soloists are announced shortly before the recital.

The recital’s repertoire includes Haydn’s String Quartet in F Major, Op. 76, No. 4 “Sunrise;” Mozart’s String Quartet in C Major, K. 157; Mozart’s String Quartet in G Major, K. 156; and Werner’s Elegie for Cello Quartet, Op. 21. The first movement of each of these works will be performed. The concert concludes with all students from the festival performing Elgar’s Serenade for Strings in E Minor, Op. 20.

The Dorian Chamber Ensemble Intensive, now in its second year, involves students from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Students are selected by audition to learn and perform chamber literature during the two-day period. Luther music professors Philip Borter, Igor Kalnin, Spencer Martin and Virginia Strauss collaborate with each chamber group in order to refine their skills as both individual musicians and ensemble members.

Luther is home to one of the largest collegiate music programs in the nation, with five choirs, three orchestras, three bands, two jazz bands and nearly 800 student musicians. Luther students participate in large ensembles, faculty-coached chamber groups, private lessons and master classes. More than 275 music majors study music theory, ear training, history, education, composition, jazz, church music and performance.
