Getting to Know Your College Town

When you first get to college, you’ll find there’s so much to learn about. Beyond finding the cafeteria and where to pick up your mail, you’ll eventually want to learn more about the new city you live in. If so, here are some tips to help you make some new discoveries.

Start Your Research

One of the best ways to learn more about your college town is to visit the website of the city’s visitor center. There you’ll find information on things to do, places to stay, where to eat, local attractions (some are free!) and upcoming events. You’ll discover other valuable resources there, too, like maps of the local area and a visitor’s guide.

Volunteer/Get a Job

Another great way to familiarize yourself with your college town is through volunteering or landing a job. As part of an organization, you’ll automatically get to know a few locals. In addition to offering your time and talents or getting paid, you’ll find that local residents are one of the best resources when it comes to learning more about the community.

Plan a Get-Together

Many of your college friends are in the same boat as you are; they’re adjusting to life in a city they’re just getting to know. Gather some ideas and invite others to join you on an outing off campus. You’ll find it’s a win-win! You’ll become better acquainted with the community and learn more about your friends at the same time!

Read Campus Bulletin Boards

Whether it’s an open mic night, craft fair, live music, or a meeting for an organization that might interest you, campus bulletin boards do a great job of letting you know what’s happening on campus and around town.

Find a Native

There’s a good chance you’ll meet someone at college who’s a local. This person can give you tips on everything from where to find the best pizza (essential to know as a college student), the safest parts of town, insight into the community’s events, and much more.

Go Explore

Taking your car for a drive or going for a walk on the streets can give you an up close look at the community. Give yourself some time along the way to allow for some stops to take in local stores, coffee shops, restaurants, or parks.
