Sports and Recreation Center (SRC)

Collage of Luther student-athletes using the Sports and Recreation Center

Projected Cost: $1.2 million

Progress: $1,265,248 committed (as of 6/30/2022)

Special Project Update (12/09/2021) and Press Release on commemorative naming to honor Luther coaches can be found here.

Luther’s Sports and Recreation Center (SRC) is gearing up for some much-needed improvements. The planned renovation of this 45,000-square-foot multipurpose facility includes a new floor surface that combines both performance and safety, replacement of the multipurpose netting system to maximize space utilization and protect users, and installation of a video board to enhance the overall spectator experience.

Constructed in 1991 as part of an expansion of Luther’s athletics complex, the SRC is heavily used year-round for practices, competition, recreation, and events. The facility currently houses a 200-meter, six-lane track; two batting cages; six tennis courts; and two basketball courts. This popular campus space is used by a wide range of teams, classes, individuals, and community members of all ages. It serves as one of Luther’s primary venues for indoor workouts, camps, and competitions.

With donor support, the new surface in the SRC will create the following benefits:

  • better training and competition space for student-athletes in track and field and tennis
  • reconfiguration to four doubles tennis courts
  • additional straightaway lanes for hosting larger track and field meets
  • upgraded venue for hosting prospective students at high school track and field meets, wrestling tournaments, and camps for baseball, soccer, softball, and tennis
  • safer flooring for all campus and community users to recreate, train, and compete

Make Your Gift Now

We are fortunate to have a space like the SRC, especially through Iowa’s cold winter months. It offers an opportunity for our track and field athletes to hone their technique and sharpen their fitness in preparation for both the indoor and outdoor seasons. With this much-needed renovation, we can do much more with the space to make it vibrant, efficient, and functional.
