Lecture Capture

Lecture capture is the process of recording classroom lectures as videos, and making them available for students to review after the class. By recording lectures, you can provide students with a way to “virtually” attend class when and where they are able. Luther College has two lecture halls and one classroom set up with hardware-based audio and video equipment that allows instructors to record in-class lectures.

Olin 102/Valders 206

Olin 102 and Valders 206 are Luther’s two largest lecture halls on campus, and both are equipped with built-in lecture capture hardware. This lecture capture technology can capture both the video of lecturer and the presentation itself. The purpose of this is for lecture playback for online use, so that viewers can see both the lecturer and the Powerpoint/videos the presenter is showing on their laptop/podium PC.

1. Plug in and power up the device you are planning on using for Powerpoint/video use. Both spaces have a podium PC, HDMI and VGA cables for laptop use.
2. Turn the projector on using the touch screen Extron panel.
3. Turn on one of the three microphone options in the space. There is a lapel microphone, a wireless handheld microphone, and a stationary podium microphone in each of the spaces. You can control the microphone volume by pressing the MIC CONTROL button on the Extron panel.
4. Plug the flash drive into the USB plate located on the top-left of the audio cabinet.
5. Wait 30 seconds for the system to read the flash drive and press the RECORD button. The recording starts 30 seconds after you press the button, allowing you to move back to the video frame. Note that when you press the RECORD button, it will blink red for a short time. When it has turned solid red, it is recording.
6. Stop recording by pressing the STOP button and wait 30-60 seconds before you remove the flash drive.
7. When you are finished recording you will have an .mp4 file on your USB drive. The .mp4 format can be played by most media players and mobile media devices.
8. You may upload the video file to YouTube or Google Drive to share with students.
9. Power the system down by using the Extron panel.

Main 116B

Main 116B is a classroom that has been equipped with a lecture capture system for use in the Communication Studies curriculum. Similar to the One Button Studio, it can be used for recording presentations, but does not have the ability to capture a computer screen in the recording like Olin 102/Valders 206.

1. Open the cabinet in the space.
2. Plug the flash drive into the USB plate located in the top-left of the cabinet.
3. Wait 30 seconds for the system to read the flash drive and press the RECORD button. The recording starts 30 seconds after you press the button, allowing you to move back to the video frame. Note that when you press the RECORD button, it will blink red for a short time. When it has turned solid red, it is recording.
4. Stop recording by pressing the STOP button and wait 30-60 seconds before you remove the flash drive.
5. When you are finished recording you will have an .mp4 file on your USB drive. The .mp4 format can be played by most media players and mobile media devices.

One-Button Studio

The One-Button Studio (OBS) is a simplified, semi-automated video recording setup that can be used without any previous video production experience. The design of the studio allows you to create video projects without having to worry about lights, cameras and video editing. The One Button Studio is a great tool for practicing and recording presentations.

Luther College One-Button Studio is located in Faculty Carrel 103 on the first floor of Preus Library. The key to the OBS can be checked out from the Circulation Desk. Along with the key, you can checkout a properly formatted USB drive.

1. Checkout the OBS key and USB drive from the circulation desk. Note that the key is checked out for one hour and the USB drive is checked out for two hours, allowing you to copy/upload your content to Google Drive or local computer.
2. Turn the studio lights on.
3. Plug the flash drive into the USB wall plate.
4. Wait 30 seconds for the system to read the flash drive and press the RECORD button. The recording starts 30 seconds after you press the button, allowing you to move back to the video frame. Note that when you press the RECORD button, it will blink red for a short time. When it has turned solid red, it is recording.
5. Stop recording by pressing the STOP button and wait 30-60 seconds before you remove the flash drive.
6. Once you are done recording the video, you can copy the files to your own laptop or use Digital Media Center computers to upload the file to your Google Drive.
7. Once the files are transferred, please delete the file from the USB flash drive and return the key and USB drive back to the circulation desk.
