In 2009, a group of Twin Cities young alumni led by Sue (Gilbertson) Boxrud '03 and Jim Kowitz '03 joined together to establish the Twin Cities Young Alumni Scholarship Fund. They created an event called "Get Down, Give Back" to raise funds to endow it.
For five years, the event was held the Friday prior to Thanksgiving at hip and fun venues around the Twin Cities...
2009 -- Five Event Center (Uptown Minneapolis)
2010 -- The Millennium Hotel (Downtown Minneapolis)
2011 -- Jax Cafe' (Northeast Minneapolis)
2012 -- Wabasha Street Caves (St. Paul)
2013 -- A'BULAE (St. Paul)
The base entrance fee and sponsorships covered the cost affiliated with hosting the event, while proceeds from activities such as silent and live auctions, raffles, photo booths, and "Great Gathering" events went directly to the scholarship fund, helping future students receive the financial support necessary to achieve their dreams of attending Luther.
When GDGB was launched, the goal was to raise sufficient funds to endow a scholarship. After five events and over $100,000 later, this goal has been reached and surpassed. As such, the work of this chapter of GDGB has been accomplished.
But, our story does not end here! With the blessing of the original founders of GDGB, we now look forward to how we will band together in the future to make a difference for Luther College students.
